The US Army Aviation and Missile Research Development and Engineering Center (AMRDEC), is sponsoring, for the 5th year, a “Beginning Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science (GEMS)” program on Redstone Arsenal this summer.
The “Beginning GEMS” program at Redstone Arsenal offers talented students, who are entering Grades 8-12 in the Fall of 2009, the opportunity to expand upon their interest in mathematics, science, and engineering with hands-on laboratory experiences including, but not limited to, micro-electromechanical systems , optics, robotics, rockets, electronics, thermodynamics, and aerodynamics. An effort is made to balance the GEMS curricula between individual learning and team challenges.
The “Beginning GEMS” program at Redstone Arsenal is a One-Week program with 3 separate sessions beginning on either July 13th, 20 July 20th, or July 27th. Each session will run Mon-Fri from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
For the 4rd year, AMRDEC is sponsoring a One-Week “Intermediate GEMS” program on Redstone Arsenal with 2 separate sessions beginning on either June 15th or June 22nd. The session will run Mon-Fri from 8:00 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. “Beginning GEMS” is a PREREQUISITE for “Intermediate GEMS”. The “Intermediate GEMS” program will stress problem solving, computer simulation, and practical applications in science and engineering.
There are currently spaces available for participation in this summer’s GEMS program at Redstone Arsenal. Interested students need to register online no later than Sunday, May 3, 2009, at the Gains in the Education of Mathematics and Science website.
A student attends one session only. With respect to “Beginning GEMS,” students need to indicate their availability and preferences for Only the 3 weeks listed. Please note that the website, although designed for GEMS programs at all locations, is the only method of registering for the GEMS program at Redstone Arsenal.
When registering, indicate “REDSTONE ARSENAL” when prompted for “Please indicate your desired location” AND indicate “REDSTONE ARSENAL” in the essay block found at the end of the application.
For ALL Redstone Arsenal applicants (both Beginning GEMS and Intermediate GEMS), the application Essay is MANDATORY.
