{"id":9122,"date":"2011-01-27T11:10:35","date_gmt":"2011-01-27T16:10:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/athomeshuntsville.com\/realestate\/?p=9122"},"modified":"2013-09-06T11:06:40","modified_gmt":"2013-09-06T16:06:40","slug":"google-drops-real-estate-listings","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/athomeshuntsville.com\/realestate\/2011\/01\/27\/google-drops-real-estate-listings\/","title":{"rendered":"Google Drops Real Estate Listings"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3>January 26, 2011<\/h3>\n<p>Google announced today that it was dropping real estate listings from its <strong>Google Maps<\/strong> platform effective\u00a0February\u00a010, 2011.\u00a0The company posted on their blog:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;In part due to low usage, the proliferation of excellent property-search tools on real estate websites, and the infrastructure challenge posed by the impending retirement of the\u00a0<strong>Google Base API<\/strong>, we&#8217;ve decided to discontinue the real estate feature within Google Maps on February 10, 2011&#8243;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>The Industry Reaction<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_9139\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 150px\">\n\t<a href=\"\/\/athomeshuntsville.com\/realestate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/industryReaction.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-9139\" title=\"industryReaction\" src=\"\/\/athomeshuntsville.com\/realestate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/industryReaction-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Industry Reaction\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/athomeshuntsville.com\/realestate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/industryReaction-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/athomeshuntsville.com\/realestate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/industryReaction.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>\n\t<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Industry Reaction<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In a blog post\u00a0about the decision, Joel Burslem of real estate marketing and communications firm &#8216;1000 Watt Consulting&#8217;, commented:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Maintaining a national property database, and, perhaps more importantly, <strong>its concurrent accuracy<\/strong>, is a huge challenge that it looks like even Google realized is too big a pill to swallow.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Inman News columnist Gahlord Dewald wrote:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;For real estate, I don&#8217;t have data that supports the idea of humans clicking on maps as a search interface ever was real &#8212; the technology vendors of map-based search still don&#8217;t have adequate analytics to give us that data. Google, I&#8217;m sure, has that data, &#8230;<strong>maybe people don&#8217;t want to use a map as a search interface for real estate<\/strong> &#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>Any Local Business Impact?<\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_9141\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 150px\">\n\t<a href=\"\/\/athomeshuntsville.com\/realestate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/localImpact.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-9141\" title=\"localImpact\" src=\"\/\/athomeshuntsville.com\/realestate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/localImpact-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"localImpact\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/athomeshuntsville.com\/realestate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/localImpact-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/athomeshuntsville.com\/realestate\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/01\/localImpact.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a>\n\t<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Little to No Local Impact<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>We liked the Google Maps real estate service because:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>All of our local listings were included<\/li>\n<li>The top 5 Google search result links were provided as additional\u00a0information on every property<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>So while we will miss the additional traffic that this Google service drove to our website daily, the traffic quantity was small and thus the impact will be small. The bigger question &#8230;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"font-size: 1.17em;\">Is Real Estate Map Search Dead?<\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: normal; font-size: 13px;\">What I found most interesting were the comments from several Industry leaders questioning\u00a0whether the <strong>low usage<\/strong> experienced by Google indicates that <strong>consumers don&#8217;t want to use a map interface <\/strong>as a real estate search interface. &#8230;Which just happens to be the result of my own\u00a0inquiries from many consumers that frequent these pages and every power-searcher I&#8217;ve talked to, including every single real estate agent I have asked this question. \u00a0&#8230;Maps are secondary not primary!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Who wants to poke around, panning, clicking, and zooming large numbers of listings that most of today&#8217;s limited filtered search maps provide? &#8230;Answer: apparently very few!<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand consumers are very interested in maps as a secondary information source and want powerful filters.
