A Local News Story Breaks<\/h3>\n

On Tuesday morning, a story broke involving a veteran who was told by the Home Owners Association (i.e. HOA) governing his condominium that he cannot display an American Flag on communal property. The name of the condominium complex (Stepping Stone Condos) was released, and our phones and emails have been ringing off the hook ever since. Why?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We feature a comprehensive property search on our websites that allows you to search for any residential property listed for sale in the North Alabama MLS and one of the most popular subdivision search mechanisms in the area. So, if there is a condo listed \u201cFor Sale\u201d in Stepping Stones Condos, it\u2019s going to appear on our website just like many other Huntsville real estate websites. However this does not mean we are associated with all the HOAs of Huntsville, it only means that these properties are for sale …that is all.<\/p>\n

Our Email and Phones Ring Off the Hook<\/h3>\n

What happens is that people are reading about the american flag story and Googling \u201cStepping Stones Condos\u201d<\/strong>. Then, when our website, pops up down in the list, they think we\u2019re managing the property in some way, prompting some really nasty, threatening calls and emails.<\/p>\n

In fact the calls and emails have been really disturbing. Someone called us \u201cNazis\u201d and a few have even threatened\u00a0bodily\u00a0harm. Yeah…it got that<\/i> bad seriously…)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Real Estate Agents vs Home Owners Associations<\/h3>\n

How can that be? We don\u2019t have any listings there. But even if we did, don\u2019t people realize that a the Home Owners Association is the one who makes and enforces community rules for condos, not<\/b> a listing agent?<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the answer is \u201capparently not\u201d. You know @Homes can\u2019t resist a \u201cteachable moment\u201d, so here\u2019s the deal:<\/p>\n

A Teachable Moment<\/h3>\n

A Realtor\u00ae may list a condo for sale in the MLS just like they might list a house for sale. The listing agent is only working with the seller of the condo, and is not affiliated with the HOA. Frankly, the listing agent vary rarely has any contact with the HOA.<\/p>\n

This infrastructure differs from let\u2019s say, an apartment community, where you have a company that owns an apartment complex. The company employs a property manager who fields and resolves all complaints.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, Stepping Stone Condos is governed by a board consisting of condo owners elected by the condo community- there\u2019s no company involved anywhere. It\u2019s more akin to a \u201ccommunity task force\u201d if you will.\u00a0We\u2019d love to be able to direct concerned persons to the contact for the HOA, but we don\u2019t even have access to that information.<\/p>\n

We Support Our Troops!<\/h3>\n

The best we can do is let our veterans know that we support them, we love our country, and we are grateful for the sacrifices\u00a0they’ve\u00a0made to keep our nation free and safe. We are a military family with living family members having\u00a0served\u00a0in WW2, Korea, Vietnam, and one of our daughters is currently serving with a Patriot\u00a0Missile Battery in South Korea. God Bless our Troops!<\/p>\n
