While @Homes engages in a variety of activities to give back to our community, I think bringing some holiday cheer to the Alzheimer’s wing at “Tut Fann” is definitely among one of our most memorable experiences. Sadly, as a society we sometimes forget about the elderly around the holidays, and keeping that in mind made this opportunity to give back all the more fun.
At first, we weren’t sure how our Christmas crafts would be received. These are veterans, mostly male, and with varying degrees of dexterity. But we quickly learned that even these heroes who have seen things most of us can’t imagine have a soft spot for pipe cleaners, glitter, and glue. And really, who DOESN’T love a little glitter around the holidays? Certainly not anybody that we know….
I think what surprised us the most about our visit was how much these gentlemen still have to tell. I don’t doubt that I speak for all of the agents when I say that the best part of the visit was hearing all of the stories of these mens’ lives. Some of these men do not have family close enough to visit often, and it was clear that while the crafts were fun, they too enjoyed having a conversation with someone new. One gentlemen told us about having been through 3 wars! Can you imagine? These men have given so much to our country, and it is a joy and privilege to be able to spend time with them, even for a short while.
When we asked the director what kind of things these gentlemen may need or want for the holidays, she listed t-shirts, socks, and scented body wash (for sensitive skin) among the most needed/requested items. That’s a short order to fill for people who have given so much! We really cannot say enough how much we enjoyed visiting with these gentlemen! If you’re feeling inspired in this season of giving, we encourage you to consider organizing a craft day with these residents. It won’t cost you much- just a little time. And we assure you it’ll be a blast!
