Uptown vs Downtown
Two different strategies of revitalization arise when you compare Charlotte NC and Birmingham AL. Both cities have under taken modernization of their city centers however each has chosen a different approach. Charlotte would bulldoze large parts of the city center and start over from scratch while Downtown Birmingham would attempt restoration one historic building at a time.
Back in the 1970’s Charlotte launched a massive PR campaign to effect a change of name and connotation from the then commonly used term Downtown Charlotte to the now widely used term Uptown Charlotte. In keeping with the new terminology used for the city center, Charlotte started a massive rebuilding project of almost the entire city center area made up of the original Four Wards. Many neighborhoods were bulldozed and rebuilt over the following decades resulting in new construction of many residential, shopping, and entertainment venues within the original Four Wards of the city center. What follows is a summary of what is currently available residential-ly speaking within the new Uptown Charlotte.
