There are a few things you may not know about the @Homes gang …we are:
- A. Either genius ourselves, or
- B. (as in my case) married one!
We are also a giving bunch. We believe in giving back to the communities that we call home.
Impact Alabama
Impact Alabama, a Student Service Initiative. Founded in 2004 by Stephen Black, they are quite the organization. Impact is Alabama’s first nonprofit dedicated to developing and implementing substantive service-learning projects in coordination with more than twenty universities and colleges throughout the state. What an impressive group of future leaders! You can read more about them here.

Impact Alabama sponsored “Huntsville’s Brightest Company” Trivia Contest last evening. Each company made a monetary donation, formed their team of employees and chose their charity. Choosing our charity was an easy choice for me. It was a personal reason. As the mother of 2 beautiful children that I adopted from an abusive home, I chose Caja of Madison County.
Court Appointed Juvenile Advocates
The Court Appointed Juvenile Advocates (CAJA) program in Madison County is affiliated with the National Court Appointed Special Advocate Association (CASA). They are an all- volunteer, community-based solution to the growing problem of child abuse, neglect and abandonment.
I’ll NEVER forget my children’s CAJA volunteer and will never be able to repay her. She fought for my children in court, so they could have a better life. They didn’t deserve the horrendous abuse they were suffering. That was 15 years ago…they are now 23 and 17!
Huntsville’s Brightest Company Trivia Contest took place at the Early Works Museum. There were 30 Huntsville teams formed. We didn’t win, but we didn’t lose either. Giving back to such an important cause is why we were there. Maybe next year we’ll win that $20,000 and be able to hand Caja the check.
Now THAT would be a wonderful day 🙂
If you are looking for a great cause to donate to, please consider Caja of Madison County …They are in desperate need of volunteers. Did you know there are over 2000 child abuse reports in Madison County alone each YEAR? Sadly, more than 500 Madison County children are in the foster care system. Due to funding limitations, only 20% of these children receive the help they need.
Shouldn’t every day be a good day when you are a kid? We can make a difference!
