Huntsville is by far one of the prettiest cities in North Alabama. We are nestled down in the Tennessee Valley with the beautiful Monte Sano Mountains that surround almost 3/4 of the city. In fact in the very middle of the city close to downtown lies, Monte Sano State Park a 2,140 acre mountaintop.
There is so much historical information about Monte Sano. In the late 1800\’s there was the Monte Sano Hotel that was visited by many well known people in America. The name Monte Sano means “mountain of health” and the hotel had the reputation of being a health resort. In 1900 the hotel closed and the Garth family purchased the Victorian style hotel and made it their summer home. It was later dismantled in 1944.

Also, for about three years, there was the Monte Sano Railway that transported passengers from Huntsville\’s downtown depot to the top of the mountain. Due to the locomotive sliding halfway down the mountain until it derailed, passengers loss of confidence in the railway, thus it has also since closed.
Today, Monte Sano Mountain is still a favorite place for families and visitors to frequent for recreation, as a favorite place to shop for a home. Nature lovers enjoy walking on the many hiking trails. The mountain also attracts mountain bike clubs from surrounding areas to challenge the biking trails. Monte Sano State Park offers cabins, pavilions, camp sites for RV\’s with all the modern conveniences or primitive sites for the real adventurer. Huntsville has a gem of nature perched right above us.
Burritt on the Mountain – A Living Museum is another great place to visit on the Mountain. The museum offers tours, movie night under the stars during the spring and summer months, and a volume of history about Huntsville\’s early days. Many young couples choose the Monte Sano Lodge to host their wedding. Standing under an arbor overlooking the city is a wonderful place to create memories for a life time. The Lodge itself is rugged but oh so charming.
