Let’s be clear from the outset; this is no doubt one of my favorite neighborhoods within the Huntsville Metro Area, so I openly admit that I am jaded when it comes to Highland Lakes. Yes it is an upscale neighborhood and certainly not for everyone, nonetheless, I do want to feature this neighborhood in our blog in hopes of ensuring that if the ‘$350k and up’ price-range is within your viewing purview you will at least visit Highland Lakes for a drive-by if not for a thorough look-see.

Why do I love this neighborhood so much? First of all I must mention the terrain layout and as is always the case with my faves, the location.
Highland Lakes is nestled on the eastern slope of Rainbow Mountain and the thing I love about the terrain in this explicit location, is that it is gently sloped in comparison to many of the steeply sloped neighborhoods of Monte Sano or Green Mountain just to the east and southeast of downtown Huntsville. The slopes of the streets in Highland Lakes don’t hinder or endanger playing children in anyway, although skate boards do require caution even on gentle slopes. Moreover, the street layout of Highland Lakes prohibits any through traffic by utilizing several cul-de-sac layouts to minimize through traffic throughout the neighborhood.

The northwest Cummings Research Park entrance is less than a mile from Highland Lakes, so for those that work in the Park or on Redstone, commuting to and from your place of employment is a breeze, as is cruising over to Bridge Street Towne Center for dinner in one of its many restaurants, a movie, or some shopping.
The annual HOA fee is $500 and the community common areas includes a club house, tennis courts, swimming pool, and small lakes and parks scattered throughout the neighborhood.
Another of the attributes that attracts area home owners to Highland Lakes is the local school system. Highland Lakes is supported by the Madison City School System via Rainbow Elementary, Discovery Middle School, and award wining Bob Jones High School.

We have been driving around the Highland Lakes subdivision and would like to contact and/or visit the developers about available lots and would like to look at some available plans. Who should we contact?

Thank you for leaving a comment about Highland Lakes. This is my favorite neighborhood in Madison. I love the street scape and the views from the top of the subdivision. Very nice!
There are only 2 lots that I am aware of in Highland Lakes. One has a tremendous drop off (it’s on the top of Inter-coastal) and the other is on the lower side. (I believe I have the street right). It is full of fill and Lord knows what has been buried there, but that could all be taken care of. The going price on one of the Intercoastal lots is ~$174,900. It is been on the market forever, so low-balling is certainly in-line, I believe.
I’m quite certain that you can bring your own builder when purchasing either of the lots. I have several names I can give you. I would always interview at least 2. We have many great builders and many that are not.
House plans are easy to come by as well. I also have loads of books but I think walking through homes gives you the best idea of what fits your needs. When you do find “the” builder, you can walk it with them as well and point out any changes.
I am working with a builder right now that is building a custom home for a client. Many highs and lows but my client would be MORE than happy to talk to you about her experience and what to look for. I was just telling her this morning that she could be a client advocate for buyers/builders. She is on it, let me tell you, lol.

Elizabeth, Thanks for your response. Linda and I are still looking for the right home in the subdivision and have been visiting some that have been for sale since I wrote you. When we were driving around we saw a beatiful home on Shoreline Drive/Circle in the cul-de-sac that has a tudor design with a turret. How can we find who the builder was so we could look at the floorplan and square footage? Since there are a few lots left we may consider building and would like to talk to the builder of that home. Thanks.
