The name Monte Sano means “mountain of health” and the hotel had the reputation of being a health resort. In 1900 the hotel closed and the Garth family purchased the Victorian style hotel and made it their summer home. It was later dismantled in 1944.
Also, for about three years, there was the Monte Sano Railway that transported passengers from Huntsville\’s downtown depot to the top of the mountain. Due to the locomotive sliding halfway down the mountain until it derailed, passengers loss of confidence in the railway, thus it has also since closed.
